Grain moisture in the silo and the store, at any depth of the heap

The humimeter RHL is a portable grain moisture meter with a ram-in probe, made for checking grain in a store, a silo or a heap. A probe up to 2 metres long makes it possible to measure the moisture in the deeper layers of the store, not only at the surface, where the conditions are often quite different from those inside.

Regular measurement in the store is the basis of protecting grain from the quality losses caused by pests, mould and bacteria. The RHL saves the results in its memory, so the course of storage can be documented and not merely checked on the spot.

What the humimeter RHL measures

The device carries factory calibration curves for five cereals - maize, wheat, barley, rye and triticale - over a range of 12 to 18 % water content. Besides the grain moisture itself the meter reports the relative and absolute humidity of the air, the dew point, the equilibrium moisture content and the water activity value.

With the aw measuring chamber connected, small grain samples can be examined as well. That is the same parameter by which a product is judged for its susceptibility to mould and bacteria, so in a grain store it answers the question whether a batch is safe to keep.

Operation and the way a measurement is taken

The probe is pushed into the grain to the chosen depth. Once the probe has reached the temperature of the material, the result appears on the display within a few seconds, with no sample taken or prepared. The measurement can be repeated at several points of the heap and the layers compared.

The results are saved to memory manually or automatically, at set intervals. The memory holds 10 000 measurements. The data can be printed on a portable printer or sent to a computer through the USB module together with the LogMemorizer software.

The probe is chosen for the height of the store

The meter is a base device to which a probe is chosen. The standard LF_TB 120 probe has a stainless steel tube 300 mm long and a 2 metre cable. To order, a tube from 200 to 2000 mm can be made, matched to the depth of the heap or the height of the silo. The head ends in a sintered steel cap that protects the sensor from damage as the probe is driven in.
