Laboratory determination of water content by the oven-drying method

LabDry is a system that supports the gravimetric determination of water content by oven drying - the measurement according to the standard, in which the sample is weighed before and after drying. It consists of calculation software for a PC, a handheld barcode scanner and aluminium dishes marked with codes.

The point of the arrangement is a single one: to take human error out of the procedure. The barcode on the dish, a balance connected to the computer and software that does the arithmetic make it impossible to mix up samples, to copy a weight incorrectly or to miscalculate. The result goes straight into the data archive.

What LabDry does not include

The balance and the drying oven are not part of the set and are chosen separately. LabDry itself neither weighs nor dries - it supplies the equipment and the logic that tie both operations into a documented measurement. Both groups of devices are described below.

How a measurement runs

  1. Take the sample with the set supplied (scoop and bucket) and transfer it into an aluminium dish carrying a barcode.
  2. Scan the code - the software knows which sample it is, without anything being typed in.
  3. Weigh the dish on the balance connected to the computer. The weight reaches the program automatically.
  4. Dry the sample in the drying oven according to the standard that applies to the material.
  5. Weigh it again. The software calculates the water content itself and stores the result in the archive.

Drying ovens to choose from

All three ovens work with forced air circulation and serve the determination of water content by oven drying according to the standard. What separates them is the capacity, that is the number of samples dried at one time.

A chrome-plated slide-in shelf is ordered separately for each oven: 13716 for oven 56, 12913 for oven 115, 13830 for oven 260.

Balances to choose from

The balance must have an interface to the computer - without it the weight does not reach the software automatically and the whole point of the arrangement is lost. All three models come with one, cable included.

The choice comes down to two questions: whether the measurement has to be documented with a verified balance (then 12499) and whether a readability of 0.1 g is enough (then the cheaper 15074).
