Leather moisture measured without damaging the product

The humimeter LM5 is held against a stack of leather and after a few seconds reports the water content together with the material temperature. The leather is left intact, so the measurement can be repeated on a finished product meant for sale.

How a measurement is taken

1. Lay the leather in a stack at least 10 mm thick - the instrument measures to a depth of 5 mm and needs material underneath.
2. Place the measuring surface against the leather and press it down evenly.
3. Read the water content and the material temperature.
4. Repeat at several places and take the average.

Checking the readings The check plate is included in the set. The manufacturer recommends checking the readings with it from time to time and comparing the result with the oven-drying method - for leather the reference method is EN ISO 4684.

LM5 or LM6

Both meters share the same housing, the same weight, the same measuring depth and the same scope of delivery. What separates them is the measuring range: the LM5 measures 3 to 20 %, that is the finished product, while the humimeter LM6 measures 3 to 65 %, that is the whole process from wet blue to dry leather. A tannery needs the LM6; a works processing finished leather is served by the LM5.
