Application

The humimeter LM6 is a handheld leather moisture meter that measures without destroying the material. It covers every type of leather and the whole moisture range - from wet blue to dried leather - so one instrument checks tanning, drying, storage and goods intake.

It is used by tanneries, leather traders and processing plants. A measurement takes seconds, needs no sample to be cut out and leaves no mark on the grain.

Calibration curves by leather density

Leather of different density conducts differently, so a curve matching the material is chosen before measuring. The meter carries six curves labelled by density plus a reference curve.

How a measurement is taken

  1. Select the curve matching the density of the leather being tested.
  2. Stack the hides at least 10 mm thick - with a thinner layer whatever lies underneath enters the measurement.
  3. Place the meter on top of the stack and press with a force of about 4 kg. The pressure has to be repeatable, because the contact between sensor and leather depends on it.
  4. The reading appears at once - water content and material temperature.
  5. Take several measurements at different places in the stack to get an average and to catch damp spots.

The instrument should be close in temperature to the material being tested. The measurement reaches 5 mm deep.

Scope of delivery

Checking the readings with the test plate

The test plate from the set is for checking the instrument yourself. The manufacturer recommends repeating it every four weeks: the measurement on the plate has to fall within the band given in the manual. It is the simplest way of catching a drifting instrument before it shows up in production results.

The manufacturer’s accredited test laboratory

In 2016 Schaller opened its own test laboratory meeting the requirements of EN ISO/IEC 17025. The laboratory is accredited for determining water content to EN ISO 4684 („Leather - Chemical tests - Determination of volatile matter”). The calibration curves of the LM6 are referred to that method, so a reading from the instrument can be compared with a laboratory result obtained under the same standard.

LM5 or LM6

Both meters share the same housing of 147 × 75 × 30 mm, the same weight of 265 g, the same measuring depth of 5 mm and the same set of functions. What differs is the measuring range, and with it the place in the process.

If the measurement has to cover the wet stages, the LM5 simply will not reach that far - above 20 % its curve ends.
