Paper moisture measured on the reel, without stopping the machine
The humimeter PM5 is a handheld meter that determines the absolute water content of paper and board on a running reel - with no sample cut out, no drying oven and no waiting for a laboratory. The sensor bars are held against the face of the reel and the result is read off.
It is made for paper producers, converters and traders: for checking incoming goods, for supervising the process and for settling complaints. It measures a warm reel straight off the machine as well as a reel that has cooled down in the store.
Why measuring a warm reel is difficult
The water content of paper depends on its temperature, and a reel coming off the machine is often considerably warmer than its surroundings. The PM5 measures the paper temperature without contact, by infrared with 90 degree optics, and takes it into account in the result. That is what makes a reading from a warm reel comparable with one from a cooled reel.
The measurement reaches 50 mm deep, so the result describes a layer of paper rather than the surface of the reel face alone.
How a measurement is taken
- Switch the meter on and select the calibration curve matching the grammage and density of the paper.
- Hold the sensor bars against the longer side of the reel.
- Read the result from the backlit display - it appears at once.
- Move the meter along the reel to find sections that are too wet or too dry and to work out an average.
- Store the readings together with the measuring point description.
For paper outside the factory curves the manufacturer creates a characteristic of its own from a sample you send in and converts the absolute water content into relative paper humidity (art. no. 12496).
