Moisture of textiles, clothing and fibre products

The humimeter RH5 tex is a portable moisture meter with a sword probe, made for textile products. The probe is pushed between the layers of the material - into a stack of clothing, a roll of fabric, a pack of gloves or a vacuum cleaner bag - and after a short adaptation time the result is read off. The measurement does not damage the material and needs no sample to be taken or weighed.

How the sword probe measures

The probe measures the relative humidity of the air in the spaces between the fibres. Inside a closed stack of material the air comes into equilibrium with the material, so the measured relative humidity corresponds to the moisture of the product. The more tightly the probe is surrounded by material and the longer the adaptation time, the steadier the reading - the measurement can be treated as finished when the values on the display stop changing.

Temperature and dew point measurement

The meter measures the temperature in parallel over a range of -10 °C to +60 °C and takes it into account in the result; the temperature can be displayed in °C or °F. It also calculates the dew point over -55 °C to +60 °C. That makes the humimeter RH5 tex suitable not only for measuring the material itself but also for checking the climate in a drying room, a warehouse or a production hall.

Logging and documenting the results

The Hold function freezes the result on the display, and the data log holds 10 000 measurements together with a measuring point report. The automatic Autolog records measurements at set intervals, which makes it possible to document a whole drying cycle or the conditions in a store without an operator present. An optional USB interface or Bluetooth module transfers the data to a computer, and a portable thermal printer prints the result right at the workplace.

Where the humimeter RH5 tex proves itself

Industrial laundries and moisture checks after drying, garment works, finished goods warehouses, producers of non-wovens and yarn, and goods intake control. Wherever a product that is too wet means a risk of mould, caking or a complaint, and one that is too dry means a loss in weight and poorer material properties.

Construction and handling

The device consists of a housing with an LCD display and a sword probe 295 mm long permanently joined to it. The whole thing is operated with one hand, and the multilingual menu leads through the settings without recourse to the manual.

With densely packed stacks and hard packaging it is worth protecting the probe with the probe holder (art. no. 10451), which is driven into the stack before the measurement. Afterwards the holder is pulled out with the dedicated tool (art. no. 10523). That set protects the probe from bending and allows the measurement to be repeated at the same spot.

The calibration of the sensor is checked with the calibration equipment for the sword probe (art. no. 10072) and certified ampoules of known relative humidity. The manufacturer also offers a factory calibration certificate (art. no. 10403) and a calibration service with adjustment (art. no. 11131).

The measuring procedure

  1. Push the sword probe between the layers of material so that it is surrounded by the product on every side.
  2. Wait for the sensor to adapt to the conditions inside the stack - the measurement is finished when the value on the display stops changing.
  3. Read the relative humidity and save it to the log together with a description of the measuring point.

Measuring in a densely packed stack with the probe protector

In hard and densely packed stacks - bales of fabric, packs of made-up goods or a stack of board - the probe is protected by a protector. The order is as follows: drive the protector into the stack, using a hammer if need be; carefully insert the probe of the meter into the protector; wait for the sensor to adapt to the conditions in the stack; read the relative humidity and withdraw the probe from the protector.

The version for paper and board is a separate catalogue item - the humimeter RH5, art. no. 11494. It has the same measuring data and differs in what comes in the set and in the curves assigned to the material.

Extended accessories

RH5 tex or SLW

The two textile meters report different quantities. The humimeter SLW works with electrodes pushed into the material and gives the water content of the fibre itself, with factory curves for cotton, wool, linen, hemp, jute, viscose, acetate, acrylic, nylon and polyester. The RH5 tex works with a sword probe and gives the relative humidity of the air between the fibres inside a closed stack, which is what the material has come into equilibrium with.

That difference decides the use. Where a figure for a named fibre is needed, the SLW is the instrument. Where a whole stack, bale or pallet is to be judged without being opened, and where the climate around the goods matters as much as the goods themselves, the RH5 tex is.
