Application
The humimeter PMP (the direct successor to the P2) measures the absolute water content of paper and solid board stacked in a pile. The measurement is non-destructive and needs no sample preparation: the device is placed on top of the stack and the result appears in seconds.
The typical user is a printing house, a paper wholesaler or a packaging manufacturer - the PMP is above all for checking an incoming delivery and documenting the state of the paper before production.
When the PMP is not the right instrument
- For measuring a reel in motion the humimeter PM5 is needed.
- For corrugated board the humimeter RH5 with its sword probe is needed.
The manufacturer states both limits explicitly. The PMP covers paper and solid board - corrugated board, with its fluted structure, is measured differently.
Calibration curves selected by the density of the paper
The PMP carries 21 calibration curves and they are chosen by the density of the material, not by its trade name. The range covers densities from 300 to 1300 kg/m³ - from tissue and filter paper (300 to 450 kg/m³), through newsprint (about 600 kg/m³), to brochure papers and cartons (1050 to 1300 kg/m³).
If the material in use fits none of the curves, the manufacturer prepares one from a laboratory analysis (art. no. 11217) or loads an existing curve into the device (art. no. 12297).
How a measurement is taken
- Select the curve matching the density of the paper.
- Stack the material at least 25 mm high. On a reel, hold the meter against the side of the reel.
- Place the device flat and press with a force of about 4 kg - the sensor surface has to touch over its whole area.
- Read the result. The measurement reaches 20 mm deep, so it describes the inside of the stack rather than the top sheet alone.
- Repeat at several points to catch differences within the pallet.

Checking the readings with the test plate
The manufacturer recommends a check every four weeks. A measurement taken on the test plate at 20 to 26 °C should give a result between 24.8 and 25.8. Anything outside that band means the instrument needs adjusting.
