The MF-S-HTD is a sensor for the continuous moisture measurement of heavy materials: solid board, carton, pulp sheets and composite panels - plasterboard, particle board and the like. It is mounted above the moving material and measures without contact, without sampling and without stopping the line.

Water content is determined by a high-frequency capacitive measurement, and the material temperature by a built-in infrared sensor, which at the same time compensates the result for temperature. The reading reaches the control room over the selected interface and can be used both to document quality and to control humidification or drying. The result does not depend on the speed of the material, so the same sensor measures a product standing still and one running along the line.

Basis weight decides the choice: MF-S-HTD or MF-P-HTD

Both sensors share the same housing, the same measuring range of 1 to 20 % water content and the same interfaces. What separates them is the basis weight of the material:

  • MF-S-HTD, art. no. 14560 - 300 to 2000 g/m², higher basis weights by agreement. Solid board, carton, pulp sheets, plasterboard and particle board.
  • MF-P-HTD, art. no. 14300 - 80 to 500 g/m². Paper web and thin board.

The MF-S-HTD is not suitable for corrugated board - the MF-P-HTD serves that.

The sensor is ordered together with an interface, because the interface decides how it is powered and how the data reaches the control room:

Moisture profile across the full width

Mounted on a traverse, the sensor travels across the product and records the moisture profile over the whole width of the band. That shows not only the average but whether one edge is drying faster than the middle - the most common cause of deformation and complaints with panels and solid board.

Calibration curve for the specific material

The sensor converts the signal into water content using a curve developed for the given product. The curve is produced by the manufacturer’s laboratory from samples supplied by the customer: art. no. 13762 covers one type of material in one basis weight, art. no. 15316 the same material in up to three basis weights.

HumiSenseWare: readout, calibration and a measurement archive

HumiSenseWare is PC software written for these sensors. It shows the values in real time, converts them into moisture, runs the calibration of material types and manages the measurement data. The standard licence is art. no. 14715 and requires the Modbus TCP interface (art. no. 14436). The extensions cover the function range of the LF-TD series, a Modbus interface, a TCP/IP ASCII interface, customer interface integration and a package for adding three further sensors.
